NameBiometric applications and the data protection legislation
Description

In the attempt to harmonise the appli- cation of European data protection legislation to biometric systems, the Art. 29 Data Protection Working Party adopted a working paper on biomet- rics. In this article, the risks mentioned in the working paper are summarised and some decisions of European Data Protection Authorities with respect to the implementation of biometrics are discussed. The author finds that espe- cially the application of the propor- tionality principle still leads to contra- dictory decisions.
