The "Smart Gun"

E-mail Print PDF
A smart gun is a handgun, rifle or shotgun that recognizes its owner (or other authorized users) via biometric access control — and will not fire for unauthorized users Biometric Access Control: For existing handguns as a retrofit kit, creating the first marketable "Smartgun" For new weapons under license to the major gun manufacturers For other products
Why do we need a "Smartgun"?

In the United States alone, there are 1.5 million homes where a gun is kept loaded, but not locked up, in households where there are children. 25 percent of gun-owning American parents with a child who has attempted suicide, said they nonetheless do not intend to lock up their guns.

Elements of the system:

  • Biometric access module and palm sensor, encased in the gun grip
  • Battery module, also encased in grip
  • Mechanical locking module, customized for each gun model
  • Biometric Enrollment Station, used by the gun dealer to enroll authorized users

The Smartgun’s time has come

Existing gun manufacturers have failed to launch any ‘Smartgun’ models, despite long-standing claims about having such weapons ‘on the drawing boards’ Existing manufacturers have believed their customers (for new guns) may revolt at a ‘Smartgun’

Existing guns:

  • More than 600 million guns worldwide
  • More than 235 million guns in the U.S.
  • Approximately 87 million handguns in the U.S.
  • Approximately 22 million handguns in Europe

New guns:

  • About 5.3 million guns are sold in the U.S. each year
  • About 1.8 million handguns are sold in the U.S. each year
