TRENTON -- Handgun purchases in New Jersey would be limited to one per month after lawmakers gave final approval early today to a controversial bill that had stalled for months and re-emerged in the rush before the Legislature's summer break.
The measure, now before Gov. Jon Corzine, would make New Jersey the fourth state to limit handgun purchases to once a month, according to gun control activists.
Sponsors and supporters said the measure would stem the flow of guns and prevent criminals from distributing handguns throughout New Jersey.
"In communities across the state, we are seeing and feeling the effects of gangs and gun violence brought on by easy access to illegal handguns,'' said Sen. Sandra Cunningham (D-Hudson), a sponsor who said the measure attacks that problem by "eliminating the financial incentive for would-be traffickers.''
However, gun enthusiasts and some lawmakers said the bill would punish law-abiding gun owners. To address their concerns, Corzine issued an executive order moments after the vote creating a task force examining the law's impact on collectors and sportsmen.
