"In communities across the state, we are seeing and feeling the effects of gangs and gun violence brought on by easy access to illegal handguns,'' said Sen. Sandra Cunningham (D-Hudson), a sponsor who said the measure attacks that problem by "eliminating the financial incentive for would-be traffickers.''
However, gun enthusiasts and some lawmakers said the bill would punish law-abiding gun owners. To address their concerns, Corzine issued an executive order moments after the vote creating a task force examining the law's impact on collectors and sportsmen.
